My hero, Dave Ramsey, tells of abusive practices and the violation of Federal law incorporated by debt collectors – particularly credit card debt collectors. Most people do not know that they have rights guaranteed to them by the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act (FDCPA) and debt collectors knowingly and habitually break these laws in order to frighten them into paying. IT IS NOT AGAINST THE LAW TO OWE MONEY! Do not allow yourself to be lied to (example: “You’re going to go to jail if you don’t pay this” is one of their favorites!) or treated without the dignity you deserve. KNOW YOUR RIGHTS UNDER THE FDCPA: Collectors can NOT call you before 8 am or after 9 pm Collectors can NOT threaten to have you arrested or charged with a crime if you dont pay Collectors can NOT continue to call after you have indicated you want them to stop (record your conversation with them, tell them you ARE recording it, write the date and time down in a journal, and follow up with a certified letter stating they may no longer call.) Collectors can NOT call friends, family members or colleagues repeatedly in order to get you to pay (they may call your acquaintances ONCE in order to track you down and may NOT mention that you owe money or give ANY information that would lead someone to believe that they are attempting to collect a debt.) For more information on your rights under the FDCPA, please visit my website at www.myarrp.com (click on the “Help With Credit” link at the top.) To the scum

@DeathToAllReligions Hey you…just to fill you in on a little secret. Debt Buyers, buy debt. They’re the ones who buy the debt and get you to pay them back. However, they most of the time do the same job as a Debt Collector. Debt Collectors though, are companies who’s services are hired by a creditor to collect the money that the Debtor (consumer) owes. If the debt collector cannot get the consumer to pay, then they sell it to a debt buyer. So the faster you pay your debt, you’re better off.

@IronJustice08 Yeah?? That’s funny. Cause I’m a bill collector. In order to not get into collections myself, I took what I could. On top of that, I’m going to school to be a history teacher. Stereotyping is bad. People only like to treat it bad when it’s a race that’s being stereotyped. But in all honesty, your own post showed how uneducated you are. Oh, should I have thrown in a percent to make it sound like I know what I’m talking about? How about 95% of percentages are made up facts?

@falstaffswims actually….thanks to people who don’t pay their bills, this country IS nursing us through life. Thanks to you not paying your bills, I can pay mine. And YES, I CAN help you pay pennies on the dollar to get rid of your debt. YES, I CAN help you get out of the whole your in. NO, I DON’T steal your money. Basically, I’m recovering the money you stole from someone else. I mean really, these people aren’t paying on nothing. They’re paying on money that was lent to them.

Owing money isn’t against the law, your right. But breaking a contract is. That’s why these people go to civil claims court if they don’t pay. If creditors aren’t guaranteed their money back, if people don’t pay their bills, interest rates will go up. It’s simple really, debt collectors remind the dumb people that a bill has to be paid. So pay your damn bill! Seriously, this guys just dumb. Debt collectors don’t buy debt on the dollar. Debt buyers do. Get your facts right before you go on a rant

How can you tell when somebody on the tv is lying?? They’re mouths are moving. I’d trust a bill collector before somebody in the media.

If one of these assholes told her they were gonna come over and take my kid’s toys away, I would take the first plane to that collection agency, hunt that agent down, and beat his/her ass in front of everyone in that place….

wow, it would be really smart if our education system actually revolved around the monetary value. I think people would better handle their finances. Just my thought. thats all im sayin.

I don’t see that collection agencies work. I owed close to 20 grand and they never got 1 cent out of me. I filed bankruptcy and my credit is decent now.

Wow! Generalization at is worst. Looks like a PR tactic successfully swaying the masses towards his narrow view. Realize marketing in America and the consuming machine we have become. Financial Guru’s bias point of view. Loss of respect for Mr. Ramsey in regards to credit card debt in America. 784 FICO

most collection agents need anger management. If their day has been that bad that they need to harass then it’s time for a new job. No sweat off my back, it’s why they’re stuck in an office playing predator at 7pm & not with a significant other or family, I feel sorry for em.

I’m a debt collector and I sleep like a baby at night. While I don’t support abusive or illegal tactics, I have no sympathy for anyone whose greed writes checks their ass can’t cash. 100 years ago you got thrown in jail for not paying your bills, so don’t boo-hoo to me over a few phone calls. Grow up, pay what you owe and quit expecting the smart and mature among us to foot the bill for your laziness.

@lovey10405 They break the law with their abusive tactics. They think they are owed money when a person never signed a contract with them, but are simply looking to make money off of someone who dosent have any. plain and simple

@lovey10405 I for one have no problem ignoring your calls if I have more important things to do with what little money I have. Calling my parents house my employer and calling me 99 times a day not only annoys me its really ourright nasty! Don’t assume that because someone has debt that they are just lazy no goods. Just cant afford to pay you 700 when I got rent due.

@lovey10405 Understand that when people “run” or get “shitty” attitudes is because they have had someone come at them harshly trying to collect a debt that its obvious they cant pay at the moment. If they did then you would not be calling them. And despite what you believe some people just dont have the money. They may not have a job and what little money they may have has to go towards gas, light, water, kids, medicine if they have a health condition.

In UK Debt Collection is heavily regulated in terms of Data Protection Laws and procedure. ive worked in Mortgage Reposession for 4 years ive never heard anything like this here. The idea is to come to an arrangement with the debtor and TALK about there account and what they can do, if they can pay great. If they cant then i advise them what the procedure is.

Debt collection is a form of ADMIN thats it ! So to see people use it as an ego trip is worrying !!

0:55- The reason there is no agency out there to deal with these debt collectors from committing these acts that are against the law is because they are most likely run by agency that started this mess- the Federal Reserve.
